250 Years of Independence

ChatGPT Image Jun 8 2026 08 43 32 PMThis Fourth of July feels a little different.

For 250 years, Americans have celebrated Independence Day. That’s a lot of birthdays, barbecues, parades, fireworks, and family gatherings.

It’s also a lot of history.

As I look around Willow Lake this time of year, I see American flags flying from porches, flowers blooming in red, white, and blue planters, and neighbors gathering together to celebrate. Children run through yards waving sparklers while the smell of hamburgers and hot dogs drifts through the warm summer air. It makes me think about the people who came before us. The men and women who built communities, raised families, started businesses, worked the land, served their country, and helped shape the nation we live in today.

While the Fourth of July is certainly a time for celebration, it’s also a time for gratitude. Gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy. Gratitude for those who have served to protect them. And gratitude for the communities we call home.

One of the things I love most about Willow Lake is how people look out for one another. When someone needs help, neighbors step in. When there’s a community event, people volunteer. When times get difficult, folks find a way to lend a hand. In many ways, that’s what independence has always been about. Not standing alone. But having the freedom, responsibility, and opportunity to build strong families, strong communities, and a better future.

This year, as we celebrate 250 years of independence, I hope you take time to enjoy the people around you. Share a meal, attend a local event, watch the fireworks, and make a few memories.

Mo is already hoping someone accidentally drops a hot dog. Roxie is hoping everyone celebrates quietly and remembers that fireworks are entirely unnecessary.

As for me, I’ll be grateful for another summer in Willow Lake and for all of you who stop by to spend a little time here.

Happy Fourth of July and happy 250th birthday, America.

Before heading out to enjoy fireworks or a community celebration, toss a few extra bottles of water into a small cooler. Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a long summer day.
