A day at the beach is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. Warm sand, cool water, and the sound of the waves have a way of making everyday worries disappear. But every beach is a little different. If you’re visiting a beach for the first time, spending just a few minutes learning about it before you leave home can make your day safer, more comfortable, and a lot more enjoyable.
Before You Go
🌊 Check the water temperature.
A hot summer day doesn’t always mean warm water. In some areas, the water can still be surprisingly cold, and that can affect how long it’s safe and comfortable to swim.
🚩 Learn what the beach flags mean.
Many beaches use colored flags to let visitors know about water conditions. Knowing what each flag means before you arrive can help you make good decisions once you’re there.
🏖️ Know where activities take place.
Some beaches have designated areas for swimming, surfing, fishing, boating, or personal watercraft. Staying in the proper area helps everyone enjoy the beach safely.
🌬️ Check the wind forecast.
The direction of the wind can make a surprising difference. An onshore breeze may bring cooler air from the water, while other wind directions can make the beach feel much hotter. In some areas, certain winds can also bring green flies ashore, so it’s worth checking local conditions before you head out.
🌊 Check for rip current advisories.
Even experienced swimmers can be caught off guard by rip currents. Before leaving home, see if any advisories have been posted for the beach you’ll be visiting.
🚻 Know where facilities are located.
Finding parking, restrooms, changing areas, and lifeguard stations ahead of time makes your day much easier once you arrive.
🗑️ Leave only footprints.
Pack a small trash bag and take everything you brought with you when you leave. A clean beach helps protect wildlife and ensures everyone can enjoy it.
One of the best parts about being prepared is that once you’ve done it, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the beach instead of dealing with unexpected surprises.
Pepper’s Prepper Tip
Keep a small mesh bag in your beach tote. It’s perfect for collecting shells, and because the sand falls through the holes, you won’t end up bringing half the beach home with you.
Until next time… stay prepped & prepared
