Every August, as backpacks are nearly sold out in stores and school buses begin running through Willow Lake, I can’t help but think back to my own school days.
Mom had a way of making busy mornings seem almost effortless. Looking back, I realize it wasn’t because our family was unusually organized. Trust me, with three brothers, “organized” wasn’t exactly the first word that came to mind. There was always someone who couldn’t find a homework assignment, another who waited until the last minute to announce he needed poster board for a project, and at least one brother who insisted he knew exactly where his sneakers were… until it was time to leave.
Somehow, Mom managed to keep us all moving.
Now I understand her secret… she prepared as much as she could the night before. Preparedness isn’t just for emergencies. It can make everyday life a whole lot easier.
Here are six quick tips to make school mornings less stressful.
1 — Pack Backpacks the Night Before
Homework, library books, permission slips, lunch money, sports equipment—it’s much easier to gather everything before bedtime than to search for it while everyone’s trying to get out the door.
2 — Pick Out Tomorrow’s Clothes
Choosing clothes the night before saves time and eliminates one more morning decision. It may seem like a small thing, but little time savers quickly add up.
3 – Make Lunches Easy
If you’re packing lunches, prepare as much as you can the night before. Fill reusable water bottles, wash fruit, portion snacks, and place everything together in the refrigerator so it’s ready to grab in the morning.
4 — Check the Calendar
Take a quick look at tomorrow’s schedule. Is there an early dismissal? A field trip? Soccer practice? Music lessons? Knowing what’s ahead helps avoid those “I forgot!” moments.
5 — Create a Launch Pad
Mom always had one spot near the door where everything waited to go the next morning. Backpacks, jackets, shoes, and anything else we needed were all in one place. It’s a simple habit I’ve never forgotten.
6 — Keep Breakfast Simple
Cut up fresh fruit and put in individual containers that the kids can grab for themselves. Same with cheese to go with the fruit. Yogurt with granola. Overnight Oats. Muffins. Biscuits. Hard boiled eggs. Anything that doesn’t require major cooking in the morning when everyone is rushed. Because no child willingly gets out of bed bright and early with plenty of time to spare. My brother Thomas was the worst and now he is a Math teacher. Go figure.
One Last Thought
Life has a way of throwing enough surprises our way without creating a few of our own. You may not be able to prevent forgotten homework or the occasional missing sneaker, especially if you have a house full of energetic kids, but a little preparation the evening before can make mornings feel a lot less rushed.
My mom figured that out years ago. I just didn’t appreciate how smart she was until I was older.
🎒 Prepper Tip… Keep an “Oops!” Drawer
Designate one drawer or small basket near the door for those easy-to-forget essentials: pens, pencils, notebooks, sticky notes, reusable shopping bags, spare house keys, phone chargers, tape, and a flashlight. Whether it’s a busy school morning or you’re rushing out the door for work, having everyday essentials in one easy-to-find place can save time and frustration.
Until next time… stay prepped & prepared.
