Make It Easy to Eat in the Heat

ChatGPT Image Aug 8 2026 09 38 47 AMA prepper is always prepped and prepared, and that doesn’t mean only being ready for emergencies. Sometimes it simply means keeping an eye on what’s coming and planning accordingly. And lately, what’s coming seems to be heat. Lots of it.

So, when I check the weather and see temperatures climbing for the coming week, I start thinking ahead. I don’t want to turn on the oven when it’s ninety-something degrees outside, and I certainly don’t want to stand over a hot stove any longer than necessary.

That’s when a little food prep comes in handy. The idea is simple: before the heat arrives, stock the refrigerator with ingredients you can mix and match into quick, easy meals without heating up the kitchen.

Start with a Few Proteins

Having two or three ready-to-eat proteins in the refrigerator gives you the beginning of several meals.

A store-bought rotisserie chicken is one of my favorites. Take the meat off the bones when you get home and refrigerate it. You can use it for sandwiches, wraps, salads, or chicken salad.

Hard-boiled eggs are another easy choice. Add them to a salad, make egg salad, or simply have one with some cheese, fruit, and crackers.

Deli turkey or ham, tuna, cheese, hummus, and cottage cheese can also give you plenty of options without cooking.

Wash and Prep Fruits and Vegetables

This is one of those jobs that’s worth doing ahead of time.

Wash berries and grapes, cut up melon, slice cucumbers and peppers, clean celery, and have some lettuce or salad greens ready to go.

When everything is already washed and waiting in the refrigerator, putting together lunch or dinner takes minutes.

And on a really hot day, cold watermelon straight from the refrigerator can taste awfully good.

Keep Some Easy Sides on Hand

Potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw, three-bean salad, pickles, olives, cheese, crackers, and fresh fruit can turn something as simple as a sandwich into a complete meal.

You don’t have to make everything yourself, either. If your grocery store makes a potato salad you love, let them do the work. The whole point is to make life easier during a hot spell.

Think Mix and Match

This is where being prepared really pays off.

Rotisserie chicken + lettuce + tomatoes + cheese = chicken salad.

Turkey + cheese + lettuce + a tortilla = a wrap.

Tuna + crackers + cucumbers + fruit = an easy lunch.

Hard-boiled eggs + cheese + fresh vegetables + hummus = a cold supper plate.

Chicken + coleslaw + a wrap = another meal.

You don’t need a week’s worth of completely different recipes. You need a handful of ingredients that can work together in different ways.

Don’t Forget Breakfast

Breakfast can be easy too.

Yogurt with berries and granola, overnight oats, cereal with fruit, a bagel with cream cheese, or a hard-boiled egg with fresh fruit can all get the day started without heating up the kitchen.

Do the Work Before the Heat Arrives

If I know a stretch of hot weather is coming, that’s when I’ll do anything that requires cooking. Boil the eggs. Make a pasta salad. Cook something that tastes just as good cold the next day. Then, when the temperature climbs, most of the work is already done.

That’s really what preparedness is about. You pay attention. You plan ahead. And you make things a little easier on yourself.

There’s no prize for standing over a hot stove on a ninety-five-degree day when a cold chicken wrap and a bowl of watermelon will do just fine.

A little planning ahead can keep both you and your kitchen cooler.

Until next time… Stay prepped & prepared.

☀️ Prepper Tip: Keep a No-Cook Meal Shelf

Set aside one spot in your pantry for foods you can turn into a meal without using the stove or oven. Keep it stocked with things like tuna or chicken packets, crackers, tortillas, peanut butter, canned beans, dried fruit, nuts, and other family favorites. Why keep them together? If the heat becomes extreme—or a summer storm knocks out the power—you already know exactly where to find foods that require little or no preparation. Just remember to rotate what you keep there and replace items as you use them.
