Don't Wait Until You're Out

The days are getting longer, the weather is heating up, and before we know it, we’re spending more time outdoors. Cookouts, camping trips, walks with the dog, afternoons in the garden, and weekends spent enjoying everything summer has to offer. That’s why now is a good time to take a look at a few things you use regularly this time of year.

One of the easiest ways to be prepared is to avoid running out of something when you need it most. We’ve all done it. You head outside for a walk and discover the sunscreen bottle is nearly empty. You’re planning a picnic only to realize you’re out of insect repellent. The weather forecast calls for a stretch of hot days and suddenly you’re wishing you’d picked up a few extra bottles of water on your last trip to the store.

Summer has a way of sneaking up on us. And if you’re like me, summer also means cookouts. Before your first barbecue, take a quick look through your pantry and outdoor supplies. Make sure you have the basics on hand—paper plates, cups, napkins, plastic utensils, charcoal or propane, ketchup, mustard, relish, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, and any seasonings you enjoy using. It’s amazing how often we assume something is there only to discover we’re scraping the bottom of the bottle when guests arrive.

A quick check now can save frustration later. Think about the items you use most often during the warmer months. Sunscreen, insect repellent, bottled water, pet supplies, batteries, medications, charcoal for the grill, or anything else your family regularly depends on. I’m not talking about filling your garage from floor to ceiling. Just take a few minutes to see what you have and what you might need soon.

Being prepared isn’t always about having more. Sometimes it’s simply making sure you don’t run out of what you already use. And trust me, Mo appreciates it when I don’t discover we’re out of his favorite treats after we’ve already run out.

Pepper’s Prepper Tip

Add a few citronella plants near outdoor seating areas. They help create a more enjoyable space for family and friends—and they’re a lot prettier than swatting mosquitoes all evening.

Until next time, stay prepped & prepared
