Summer is officially here.
That means vacations, weekend getaways, visits with family and friends, camping trips, and day trips to places you’ve been meaning to see. And if you’re anything like me, you’re probably focused on what to pack, where you’re going, and whether you remembered to bring your phone charger. But before you walk out the door, take five minutes to think about the place you’re leaving behind. A few quick checks can help you enjoy your trip without worrying about what you may have forgotten.
I like to do a quick walk-through before I leave. It doesn’t take long, and it gives me peace of mind knowing things are in order at home. First, check your doors and windows. It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to overlook one when you’re rushing to get on the road. Next, take a look in the refrigerator. Toss anything that’s close to expiring and make sure leftovers won’t be greeting you with an unpleasant surprise when you return. If you’ll be gone for more than a few days, think about your mail. A stuffed mailbox is one of the easiest ways to advertise that no one is home.
Don’t forget your plants, either. A little water before you leave—or arranging for someone to stop by—can make a big difference. And finally, let a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor know you’ll be away. Not so they can throw a party at your house, but so someone knows to keep an eye on things while you’re gone.
Being prepared doesn’t always involve flashlights, batteries, or emergency supplies. Sometimes it’s simply taking a few minutes before you leave so you can relax and enjoy where you’re going.
Before You Leave Checklist
- Check doors and windows
- Empty trash cans
- Remove food that may spoil
- Water indoor and outdoor plants
- Arrange for mail pickup or a mail hold
- Let a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor know you’ll be away
- Double-check medications, chargers, and travel documents before leaving
- Turn off unnecessary electronics
Pepper’s Prepper Tip
Place a few ice cubes in a cup and leave it in your freezer before you go away. If you return and find the ice has melted and refrozen into a solid block, you’ll know the power was out long enough for your freezer contents to thaw.
Until next time, stay prepper & prepared
