Sunburns, Sandals & Situational Awareness

BookBrushImage 2025 7 14 16 5155Summer brings longer days, warmer weather, and a false sense of security.

There’s something about the sun shining and the air smelling like fresh-cut grass that makes people lower their guard. It’s easy to get caught up in the season—trading shoes for sandals, leaving your windows open, forgetting that safety and awareness don’t take a vacation.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: preparedness doesn’t depend on the weather. In fact, summer can catch you off guard faster than you think.

Here are a few tips I keep in mind to stay safe—and prepared—when the heat rolls in.

1. Don’t Underestimate the Sun

Sunburn might seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can turn into heat exhaustion or dehydration before you realize it. Keep sunscreen in your bag, a wide-brimmed hat in your car, and always carry water—even on short outings. Your future self will thank you.

2. Think Twice About Your Footwear

Those cute sandals? Great for the beach. Not so great if you need to move fast, walk far, or navigate uneven terrain. A blister can slow you down, and in an emergency, that’s the last thing you want. Pack a backup pair of practical shoes in your trunk or emergency bag.

3. Be Situationally Aware—Always

Crowded events, unfamiliar parking lots, trails, rest stops—summer is full of places where distraction can cost you. Pay attention to your surroundings. Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Preparation starts with observation.

4. Keep a Summer-Ready EDC (Everyday Carry)

Your summer gear should shift with the season. My go-to items: sunscreen, small first aid kit, water, electrolyte tablets, multitool, mini flashlight, and insect repellent. It all fits in a compact crossbody bag and ensures I’m covered no matter where the day takes me.

5. Don’t Let the Season Lull You

Just because it’s sunny doesn’t mean you’re safe. Criminals, accidents, and unexpected emergencies don’t take the summer off. Whether you’re grilling in the backyard or heading out on a weekend trip, make sure someone knows where you are, your phone is charged, and you’ve got a backup plan.

Staying safe in summer isn’t about living in fear—it’s about being aware, staying ready, and enjoying the season with confidence. Because when you’re prepared, you can relax more fully knowing you’ve already thought a step ahead.

Stay prepped and prepared,
