Letting the Fresh Air In

Cozy cabin living room serenityThere comes a day—usually when the sun finally remembers we exist—when I open the windows and just stand there for a minute not doing anything, just breathing.

Winter has a way of sealing everything up. Doors closed, windows shut tight, blankets layered, and the air inside starts to feel… used. Not bad exactly, just tired. Like it’s been doing its job a little too long without a break. That’s when I know—it’s time.

Time to let the fresh air in.

And I don’t mean cracking a window for five minutes. I mean open them wide. Front to back if you can. Let the breeze move through the house like it’s got somewhere to be. You’d be surprised how quickly everything feels lighter. Even Mo notices. He plants himself right in the middle of the draft like he’s been waiting all winter for it.

Now, since I’m me, I don’t stop at just opening windows. First, I do a quick sweep of the sills. Winter leaves behind its own little collection—dust, a few stray bugs, the occasional mystery crumb. A quick wipe down makes a difference, and it keeps you from wondering later what just flew past your face.

Screens get checked next. If you’ve got a tear, now’s the time to fix it. Nothing ruins a fresh spring breeze faster than realizing you’ve invited in every bug within a five-mile radius.

Then I take a few minutes to freshen up what I call the “soft spots”—curtains, throw blankets, couch pillows. You don’t have to wash everything in one day, but even swapping things out or giving them a shake outside helps clear that winter heaviness.

And here’s something simple that goes a long way—let sunlight do its thing. Pull the curtains back. Let it hit the floors, the counters, the corners that have been living in shadow for months. Sunlight is one of the best refreshers we’ve got, and last I checked, it’s still free.

By the time I’m done, the house doesn’t just smell better—it feels better. Lighter. Easier. Like it’s ready to move into a new season right along with me, and honestly, so am I.

Even an hour of fresh air moving through your home can clear out stale air, lift your mood, and give everything a reset. Open a couple of windows, let the breeze do the work, and consider it one of the easiest prep tasks you’ll ever check off your list.

Pepper’s Prep Tip: Don’t wait for the perfect spring day—take advantage of the first good enough one.

Stay prepped & prepared
