A Night in History at the Willow Lake Historical Society

Romantic Halloween at Willow MansionWillow Mansion will open its doors tonight on Halloween for A Night in History, a fundraiser for the Willow Lake Historical Society.

The idea is simple… choose any period in history and dress for it.

Apparently, the rest of Willow Lake liked the idea too, because the tickets sold out weeks ago.

No one is happier about that than my mother. As mayor, Mom is always looking for events that bring people into town and support Willow Lake. As my mother, she also enjoys reminding me that serving on a community board involves more than attending meetings and eating whatever Amy brings.

I maintain that refreshments encourage productive discussion. Mom maintains that I’m missing the point.

Then there were the costumes. Once Amy announced the theme, I started considering possibilities.

The 1920s could be fun.

Victorian might work.

Maybe something from the 1940s.

Ian required considerably less thought.

“A kilt,” he said.

“You’re supposed to choose a period in history.”

“A kilt,” he repeated.

“There are thousands of years to choose from.”

He gave me look. “I’m Scottish.”

So, Ian Macgregor will be attending Halloween at Willow Mansion this evening in full Highland dress… kilt and all.

I don’t expect complaints.

Which left me… if I was going to walk into Willow Mansion beside a Highlander, I decided I might as well choose something that went with him. I’m going as a Scottish duchess. A beautiful gown. Hair properly arranged. Maybe even a little sparkle. It’s Halloween. I’m allowed.

Amy thought it was a wonderful idea.

Ian thought it was an even better one.

And somewhere between choosing my costume and remembering that we’ll soon be leaving for Scotland, it occurred to me that perhaps dressing as a Scottish duchess wasn’t the most innocent choice I could have made.

Especially considering my history with mysteries.

Happy Halloween!
