6 Hydration Hacks: How to Keep Cool Without Losing Your Cool!

BookBrushImage 2025 7 1 11 2741The Fourth of July is almost upon us and with it the summer heat. Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Dehydration can sneak up on you faster than an unexpected power outage. Whether you’re weeding the garden, hiking, hanging out at the beach or pool, or simply running errands in high humidity, staying hydrated is one of the most important steps you can take to stay healthy and alert.

As a prepper, I treat hydration the same way I treat all preparedness: with a plan.

Here are a few hydration hacks I rely on when the temperature rises:

1. Pre-Hydrate

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Start the day with a full glass of water, even better, add a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lemon. It helps replace electrolytes and jumpstart your system before the sun gets high.

2. Keep Water Visible and Accessible

Out of sight, out of mind. Keep a refillable water bottle with you at all times, preferably stainless steel or insulated. I stash extras in my car, Mo’s go-bag, and my gardening kit. You never know when one will come in handy.

3. Infuse for Encouragement

If plain water isn’t appealing, try adding cucumber, mint, citrus slices, or berries. Natural flavors make it easier to keep sipping, especially on long days outside.

4. Don’t Forget Moisture-Rich Foods

Watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, lettuce—these aren’t just tasty summer snacks, they help with hydration too. I always keep a container of chilled fruit in the fridge. Mo prefers ice cubes, but we each have our methods.

5. Shade Your Head, Not Just Your Drink

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored clothing keeps your core temperature lower, reducing how much water your body needs to stay balanced. Shade isn’t just comfort—it’s survival.

6. Monitor More Than Your Thirst

Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and dry mouth are early warning signs of dehydration. If you’re sweating a lot and haven’t needed a bathroom in hours, it’s time to drink up—preferably before it gets worse.

Final Tip:

Hydration is a prepper’s first line of defense in the heat. We prepare to stay ahead of the curve, and in summer, that means being water-wise at all times.

Until next time… Stay prepped and prepared.
