St. Patrick’s Day, Pepper-Style

ChatGPT Image Feb 16 2026 06 24 35 AMSt. Patrick’s Day has always been one of those holidays that sneaks up on you.

Suddenly everything turns green, someone’s talking about luck, and there’s corned beef on sale at the grocery store. I don’t have anything against luck. I just don’t rely on it.

Around here, St. Patrick’s Day is less about chasing four-leaf clovers and more about appreciating what steady preparation can do. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned living in Willow Lake, it’s that what people call “luck” is usually just quiet planning showing up at the right time.

The power doesn’t stay on during a storm because of luck.

The pantry doesn’t stay stocked because of luck.

The car doesn’t start on a cold morning because of luck.

It’s preparation.

That doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with the holiday. If you want festive without going overboard, Willow Lake has you covered.

Sadie at Sadie’s Bakery & Café always gets a sparkle in her eye when a holiday rolls around. If I had to guess what she’ll put in the case, I’d say you’ll see shamrock sugar cookies with green sprinkles, cupcakes crowned with swirls of pale-green frosting, and maybe those rich brownies she does so well—topped with minty drizzle or little chocolate coins. And I wouldn’t be surprised if she turns out a tray of cream-filled pastries dusted in green sugar, just because she can.

Over at the Star Diner, Zelda keeps it classic. On St. Patrick’s Day, you can count on corned beef and cabbage landing on the board, and she usually adds Irish soda bread on the side—warm, hearty, and the kind of bread that makes you think you should be wearing an apron even if you’re only eating. If Zelda’s in a particularly festive mood, she might even offer a simple dessert—something comforting and old-fashioned that doesn’t try too hard.

And that’s kind of how I like the day too. Festive, but sensible. I might bake something small at home. A batch of cookies. A quick loaf. Something warm and simple that makes the kitchen smell good. But I still keep one eye on the forecast and one eye on my checklists.

If March winds decide to blow in hard that day, I’m not depending on good fortune to carry us through. I’m depending on charged flashlights, working batteries, and rain gear that’s ready to go. That’s my version of luck. Being ready.

There’s something comforting about knowing you’ve done what you can. It frees you up to enjoy the little things—a decorated storefront on Main Street, a warm meal, and a quiet evening at home. Mo snoring at our feet. Roxie pretending she doesn’t care about any of it. And me curled up beside Ian on the couch, watching a classic like The Quiet Man and pretending we haven’t seen it more times than we can count.

So, if you celebrate, celebrate.

Wear green. Bake something simple. Treat yourself to something from Sadie’s case. Let Zelda do the cooking if you’re lucky enough to get a booth at the diner.

Just don’t forget that the best kind of “luck” is the kind you build for yourself.

Stay prepped and prepared,

Pepper
