Vacations are meant for rest, a change of scenery, and maybe a good mystery novel by the water. But while I fully support putting your feet up, I never believe in putting your awareness down. Prepping isn’t something we leave behind—it travels with us. And it doesn’t take much to stay alert and ready, even in flip-flops.
Here are a few ways I stay prepped while away from home:
1. The Mini Go-Bag
It may not be the full-sized bug-out bag, but I never travel without a scaled-down version. Mine includes a small flashlight, multitool, first-aid essentials, water purification tablets, a portable charger, and a laminated list of emergency contacts.
2. Scan and Save Important Documents
Passports, IDs, travel itineraries—scanned and stored in a secure cloud folder, just in case. A physical photocopy tucked in my suitcase as backup doesn’t hurt either.
3. Stay Aware of Local Hazards
I do my homework before I go—weather, natural disaster risks, civil unrest, even water quality. The goal isn’t to worry—it’s to know what I might face and be a step ahead of it.
4. Don’t Trust Hotel Safes
A portable travel safe or lockable pouch is far more reliable than a hotel drawer. And valuables? If I don’t need them, I don’t bring them.
5. Blend In
I leave the “I’m not from around here” look at home. Simple, practical clothing. Quiet confidence. Situational awareness. You’d be amazed how many problems you avoid by simply not standing out.
6. Mo’s Bag Goes Too
Yes, my Alaskan Malamute has a travel pack. Food, water, portable bowl, reflective leash, and his favorite chew. Prepping includes the whole family.
7. Always Have a Way Back
I keep a little cash hidden, a charged phone, and knowledge of the fastest way back to where I’m staying—even if I have to walk. I enjoy the moment, but I always know how to move if I need to.
Taking a vacation doesn’t mean pressing pause on preparedness. With just a little forethought, you can rest easier knowing that whatever happens, you’ve got a plan—sun hat and all.
Stay prepped and prepared,
Pepper
