March has a way of making you believe spring has fully arrived. One warm afternoon and suddenly you’re ready to open every window, pack away the winter gear, and start planting everything in sight. And then the next morning reminds you that it’s still March.
Early March is a tempting time. The light lasts longer. The air softens. You notice buds forming on trees and birds returning. It feels like movement after a long pause.
But a prepper knows better than to be fooled. This is the time for preparation, not full transition. Instead of rushing ahead, I work from a simple early spring check.
Pepper’s Early Spring Prep Check
Check and clean garden tools
Organize gloves, pots, trays, and hand tools
Start seeds indoors (if you do), but double-check frost dates
Wipe down and prep outdoor planters
Gradually rotate seasonal gear — don’t store winter items too soon
Bring rain gear and lighter jackets forward
Keep snow shovels and extra blankets accessible (just in case)
It’s about readiness without overconfidence.
The weather will do what it wants. There may be one more hard freeze. One more windy storm. One more muddy week. Being prepared means allowing space for that possibility instead of pretending it won’t happen.
I also use this time to take inventory — not just of supplies, but of energy. Winter can take more out of us than we realize. Early spring is about pacing yourself. Planning ahead without exhausting yourself in the process.
The garden will grow soon enough. The windows will stay open longer. The heavy coats will find their way to the back of the closet.
For now, we prepare quietly. We tidy. We plan. We wait just a little longer.
Spring rewards patience.
Until next time… stay prepped and prepared,
Pepper
