This went out to my newsletter subscribers but I also wanted to share it here.
Just a quick heads-up—snow and some serious cold are expected across much of the country. Nothing to stress over, but it’s one of those times when doing a quick check now can save you from scrambling later. I figured I’d pass along a short list in case it helps you feel a little more ready.
- Heat check – Make sure your main heat source is working. If you rely on space heaters, give cords and outlets a quick safety look.
- Water on hand – Enough drinking water for everyone, including pets. Frozen pipes have no sense of humor.
- Food you’ll actually eat – Easy meals that don’t require much effort. Soup, pasta, oatmeal, canned goods, bread. Comfort food counts.
- Med refresh – Daily meds, pain relievers, cold/flu remedies, and tummy medicine. Snowstorms love empty medicine cabinets.
- Lights & power – Flashlights, batteries, lanterns, and charged power banks. Candles only if you’re comfortable using them safely.
- Warm layers – Extra socks, blankets, hats, gloves. Layering keeps you warm without cranking the heat.
- Snow basics ready – Rock salt or de-icer on hand, snow shovels where you can actually reach them, and snowblowers fueled and ready before the flakes start flying.
- Car basics – Gas tank at least half full, scraper, blanket, snacks, and a flashlight. Even short trips deserve prep.
- Pet prep – Extra food, water, meds, and warm spots away from drafts. They feel the cold too.
- Boots at the door – Winter boots, gloves, and coats in one easy grab spot. You don’t want to hunt for them in a rush.
- One comfort thing – A good book, a favorite show, a puzzle, or a pot of tea. Being prepared is about peace as much as supplies.
You don’t have to do everything at once. Even checking off a few items helps you feel steady and ready.
Stay warm. Stay safe. Stay prepped and prepared.
